BEING A WALDORF GRANDPARENT:
A Conversation About Building Our Relationships
As grandparents we enjoy watching our grandchildren grow and change, yet sometimes it can be difficult to establish a relaxed relationship with them, and even with their parents. Parenting choices may differ from what we had experienced. Understanding Waldorf education can open the door to a more satisfying relationship with your grandchild and his or her parents. Our panelists will share their experiences as grandparents, with a chance for discussion and exchange of ideas.
Cecelia & Peter Karpoff – Cecelia taught at Acorn Hill beginning in 1989, until she became the founding teacher of the Potomac Crescent Waldorf School in Arlington. Peter has served on the Board of Directors at both Acorn Hill and Potomac Crescent. All five of their grandchildren attended Acorn Hill from 1998 – 2012.
Massoumeh Asi, mother of four, was a middle and high school teacher for 20 years. She did not know much about Waldorf education when her granddaughter Marya started Parent Child in 2008. Soon Massoumeh started going to Parent Child with Marya, and has been a supportive Waldorf grandparent ever since!
Kevin Mutschler is an anthropologist and practitioner of Chinese Medicine. He and his wife, Leah Kedar learned about Acorn Hill in 1990 – one look at our playground was enough – they enrolled their younger son. Fast forward 20 years – and Kevin joined his granddaughter in the Parent Toddler class.
Facilitator: Liz Hagerman is our Parent Infant and Parent Toddler teacher at Acorn Hill. She values the relationships grandparents can have with their grandchildren, saying “grandparents are always welcome as honored guests in the parenting classes”.
