Welcome, Parents of Children Enrolled at Acorn Hill
The Parent Circle is Acorn Hill’s equivalent of a PTA – a gathering of parents who want to take an active part in building a vibrant Acorn Hill community. Our goal is to support the faculty and staff by organizing community-building events and fundraising activities. Although we primarily engage in volunteerism, our purpose is also to be a social forum for parents.
Please join us in our various activities and events as we share this journey as parents of young children. We are looking to get to know each other and support each other as we navigate issues facing us as parents today, and as we try to incorporate more Waldorf methods into our home lives. Please send any questions or comments to email@example.com and we will get back to you.

Thursday, February 15, 2018 7:30–9:00 pm
During this second fathering session we will look more deeply into the challenges that fathers face today in our busy and rapidly changing world. To jump start this conversation, the dads who attend are encouraged to read an article by Hanna Rosin, “The End of Men.” It appeared in The Atlantic – July/August 2010. $10 donation requested at the door.
Sunday, February 25, 2018 4:00 pm –5:00 pm
If Candlemas day be sunny and bright,
Winter again will show its might.
If Candlemas day be cloudy and grey,
Winter soon will pass away.
Candlemas, better known in these parts as Groundhog Day, has long been celebrated in various cultures to mark the middle of winter. It falls on February 2nd – midway between the winter solstice and spring equinox – and is one of the cross-quarter days that make up the wheel of the year, along with Halloween, May Day, and Midsummer. It is a time for reflection, of new beginnings, and renewal, marked by increasing physicality. The celebration of this festival day helps reflect a threshold between the earthly and heavenly worlds.
Gather around the bonfire and join the Acorn Hill community for this midwinter celebration of light, music and warmth with the entire family.
Embodying Discipline: An Experiential Workshop for Parents
Tuesday, February 27, 2018 7:30–9:00 pm
From toddlers to teens, our children call upon us to “stand firm” on issues we believe are important. On occasion, we may need to “put our foot down”, and it can be all too easy to feel like a “pushover.”
Movement is our first language, and a gesture can sometimes speak more clearly than words. In this workshop, we will increase our awareness of the non-verbal realm of parent-child communication through simple movement exercises. Clear communication assists in laying the foundation for life-long trust and understanding. This class is led by Lynn Adelman, professional dancer, movement educator, and Washington Waldorf School Early Childhood faculty member. Please dress in clothing suitable for movement. $10 suggested donation requested at the door.
Silent Auction and Social
Saturday, March 17, 2018 6:30 pm –9:30 pm
The Annual Acorn Hill Auction Social is a wonderful parents-only event featuring a catered dinner, drinks, live music, and silent and live auction! The online auction will run for two weeks prior to the Social from March 5th through the 17th and include a variety of items. Bid on priceless handmade crafts, unique goods and services donated by fellow Acorn Hill parents, restaurant gift cards and tickets to shows, and fabulous one-of-a-kind buy-in parties! All proceeds from ticket sales and auctioned items will go towards the school. Examples of past auction-funded projects include: bathroom renovations, playground improvements, and most recently, technology upgrades and the newly revamped school website. Join the greater Acorn Hill community in support of our school and come out for an evening of fun!
Tickets are $10 if purchased by February 17th, 2018 and will be $15 thereafter and at the door.
A Conversation Among Waldorf Grandparents: Building our Relationships
Wednesday, April 25, 2018 7:30–9:00 pm
As grandparents we enjoy watching our grandchildren grow and expand their horizons, yet sometimes it can be difficult to establish an easy-going, relaxed relationship with the children, and even with their parents. Parenting choices and styles may differ from what we had experienced. Understanding Waldorf education can help to open the door to a more satisfying relationship with your grandchild and his or her parents. Several panelists will share their experiences as Waldorf grandparents, with a chance for discussion and exchange of ideas. $10 suggested donation.
Saturday, May 14, 2018 10am–2pm
All are welcome! Join us for this annual and popular family event! Children enjoy outdoor games, crafts, activities and a special marionette show. Other highlights include the sale of dolls, animals, and other crafts lovingly handmade by our very own parents, Little Shop items, plants, homemade baked goods, delicious wholesome food for lunch, and a raffle.
