What are the hours of the school day?
The school day begins at 8am for those children enrolled in Early Birds. Half Day programs meet from 9 am–12 noon and Full Day programs meet from 9am–3pm. Aftercare is available from 3–6 pm. Lunch from 12–1 pm is available for children enrolled in a Half Day program.
Does Acorn Hill provide meals?
Acorn Hill provides a wholesome, organic mid-morning snack to all children, and another wholesome, organic mid-afternoon snack to children enrolled in Aftercare (3–6 pm). Children staying for lunch (12–1 pm) bring their own lunch from home.
Does Acorn Hill provide transportation?
Acorn Hill does not provide transportation. Some families arrange carpools and the office can provide lists of families in the same zip code. The Ride On bus, Route 8, stops at the corner of our property at Brunett Avenue and Lycoming St.
Where are you located?
Acorn Hill is located just inside the beltway, west of Colesville Road, off Sligo Creek Parkway.
How many students do you have?
Acorn Hill has approximately 100 students, with 60 in our nursery and kindergarten classes and 35-40 infants and toddlers enrolled with their parents in our Birth to 3 parenting classes.
Is Acorn Hill a licensed kindergarten?
Acorn Hill is both a licensed nursery and kindergarten, licensed by the Maryland State Board of Education (MSDE) and an approved child care center, through the Office of Childcare, MSDE. Acorn Hill is also a Full Member of the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America (WECAN).
What is your average class size?
Most morning groups have up to 16 children, with 2 teachers. Afternoon groups have 10-14 children, with 2 teachers.
What training have your teachers received?
All our lead teachers have completed certification in Waldorf Early Childhood Education and have bachelor’s degrees or equivalents. All teachers take annual continuing education courses in Waldorf education and more.
How do I apply to Acorn Hill?
You may apply online, print out a paper application, or call our office (301-565-2282) to receive a hard copy. Once we receive your application, arrangements will be made to attend a 30 minute Admissions Play Group and Parent Orientation event, scheduled in February prior to acceptance decisions. Is there a deadline for applying?
Applications are accepted in the fall of the year prior to entry. The deadline to apply is February 1 for first-consideration acceptances.
What if I miss the application deadline?
Applications received after February 1 are processed on a rolling basis, with admissions decisions made as openings are available.
When can I expect to hear about the admissions decision?
Admissions decisions are sent out in early March. Financial aid decisions are sent out at the same time, early March.
Is there financial aid?
Acorn Hill offers financial aid on a limited basis. Applications are available at Financial Aid & Grants, or call the school office, 301-565-2282, for more information and to receive a hard copy. Tuition assistance and grant applications are due February 1.
How do I schedule a visit?
Attending one of our Tours & Mini Mornings is the ideal way to visit. A Tour enables you to see our school firsthand and to visit several classrooms. Our Saturday Mini Mornings are popular events, with teachers, parents and board members available to answer questions. Children are welcome at the Mini Mornings, and activities especially designed for young children are set up in each classroom.
May I bring my child to visit your school?
Children are welcome at our Saturday Mini Mornings, but school Tours are for adults only. You may also drop by our school with your child between the hours of 9 am–3 pm for a look around our playground and public areas.
Where do children go after Acorn Hill?
After Acorn Hill, children successfully transition into a wide variety of public, private and home school environments.
